Where did that rain come from?

6/6/2013

This video shows a time lapse video of the weather pattern of an “Indian Ocean Dipole” (IOD) event in action, which is what generated that beautiful rain across much of Vic and NSW recently.
The northwest cloudband that tracked across Australia during late May/early June, and brought heavy rainfall to parts of the southeast of the continent. This is one example of how a warmer-than-average eastern Indian Ocean may influence southern Australia.

Satellite images originally processed by the Bureau of Meteorology from the geostationary meteorological satellite MTSAT-2 operated by the Japan Meteorological Agency.
